How to Wash Curtains? 7 Easy Steps You Can Follow at Home
Step 1: Dust the Curtains Before Removing Them
Before removing the curtains from the rail, if possible, lightly brush them with a vacuum cleaner (using the brush attachment) set to a low setting. This will remove most of the dust from the surface before they go into the washing machine.
Step 2: Do Not Fold the Curtains, Roll Them Loosely
When placing the curtains in the machine, instead of folding them tightly, roll them loosely or gather them loosely in a wide manner. Creases may remain on curtains that are folded too tightly.
Step 3: Machine Programme and Temperature Selection
Programme: Choose low-speed programmes such as Delicate/Curtain/Wool.
Temperature: 30°C is usually sufficient.
Spin cycle: If possible, use a low spin speed (400–600) or no spin at all.
Never use temperatures of 60°C or higher; your tulle curtains may shrink or lose their shape.
Step 4: Detergent and Fabric Softener Use
Prefer liquid detergent over powder detergent.
One small scoop is sufficient for a short, gentle wash.
Do not use excessive fabric softener; it may reduce the airflow through the tulle.
Optionally, you can add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse water to reduce yellowing.
Step 5: Do Not Leave Curtains in the Machine
Do not leave curtains in the machine for a long time after the programme has finished. Leaving them wet can increase wrinkles and cause unpleasant odours.
Remove the curtains immediately after the machine finishes, shake them lightly, and prepare them for hanging.
Step 6: Drying Method – Best to Dry on the Rail
Instead of putting your net curtains in the dryer:
- The healthiest method is to hang them directly on the rail to dry.
- If there are any heavy accessories, you can leave them off (until dry).
- Curtains dried on the rail generally do not require ironing; they straighten out under their own weight.
Step 7: Regular Washing to Prevent Yellowing
Wash your curtains once a year, or according to your lifestyle:
- In homes where people smoke: every 3–4 months
- With normal use: every 6 months
- In homes near dusty roads: every 3–4 months
Washing will extend the life of your curtains.
Common Mistakes
- Washing with very hot water
- Pouring bleach directly onto the curtains
- High-speed spinning
- Drying in a tumble dryer at high heat
These mistakes cause the curtains to wear out quickly and lose their shape.
